Scholarships

The Center provides scholarships for both graduate and undergraduate students each academic year.  The following endowed scholarships are available:

Michael J. Horne Endowed Scholarship

In addition, the Center works with a number of professional real estate associations that provide scholarships to students as well as discounted registration fees for memberships and special events.  Such associations include: REFF, SIOR, CREW, ULI, CoreNet and PREA among others.

Appraisal Institute Education Trust Scholarship

The Appraisal Institute Education Trust (AIET) offers scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing degrees in the real estate field.  Their scholarship opportunities include:

ULI Scholarship Fund

The Nicholas (Nick) V. Trkla Scholarship Fund was started in 1997 by  the Urban Land Insitute (ULI) Chicago in memory of Nick Trkla, a ULI Trustee and the first Chairman of the ULI Chicago District Council. Mr. Trkla, President and founder of a Chicago-based planning and financial development consulting firm, was responsible for revitalization programs throughout Chicagoland and in over 80 cities nationwide. Mr. Trkla was especially committed to the betterment of inner cities as demonstrated by his work to revitalize the North Lawndale community. Since its inception, the Scholarship has been awarded to graduate level students from Chicago area universities who excel in their studies, who embody the civic spirit of Nick, plus his interest in and commitment to sensible land use, community involvement, and ULI.

ICSC Foundation Scholarships

Established in 1988, the ICSC Foundation is the leading and most prestigious foundation for the retail real estate industry and is the non-profit public charity of the International Council of Shopping Centers, Inc. (ICSC). Their mission is to promote and reward community support efforts and provide undergraduates, graduates and retail real estate practitioners educational scholarships.  Scholarships include:

CREW CHICAGO Scholarship

CREW Chicago annually awards one or two scholarships in the amount of $3,000 for graduate and undergraduate students majoring or concentrating in real estate, construction, facility management, architecture, urban planning, real estate law, land economics, real estate appraisal or related real estate fields. The scholarships are primarily awarded on the basis of academic excellence and are intended to help qualified students pursue an education that will lead them into productive careers in commercial real estate. Applicants must be enrolled for the academic year in which the award is being sought.

CoreNet Global Chicago Chapter Scholarship

The goal of the CoreNet Global-Chicago Chapter Award for Academic Excellence is to assist qualified students in pursuing an education in real estate; to facilitate opportunities that will lead to productive careers in corporate real estate; and to promote real estate as a discrete and important field of study within the academic community.

CoreNet Global-Chicago Chapter Award for Academic Excellence recipients will receive a $5,000 scholarship and a one year student membership to CoreNet Global through the Chicago Chapter as long as they remain in an academic real estate program. The recipient will also receive free admission to all CoreNet Global - Chicago educational and networking events for one calendar year; recognition at the April 2009, New Member Appreciation Event; and a profile in the CoreNet Global - Chicago Chapter newsletter.

SIOR® CHICAGO CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIPS

Since 1984, the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR)-Chicago Chapter and the SIOR Foundation have awarded scholarships with the goal to recognize and reward outstanding academic performance in business and real estate courses and to expose recipients to career opportunities and internship programs available within the Chicago real estate community.

For the academic year of 2009-2010, a total of $12,000 will be awarded with one award of $3,000 to students from each of the following universities:
• DePaul University (Cynthia L. Bischof Memorial Scholarship)
• Northwestern University – Kellogg School of Management
• Roosevelt University – Marshall Bennett Institute of Real Estate
• University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign

Award recipients will be eligible to attend SIOR-Chicago Chapter business meetings, as long as they remain in their academic program. Award recipients are also encouraged to attend the scholarship presentation to be held during SIOR’s Holiday Luncheon.

SIOR® FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The Mildred C. Hanson, SIOR Memorial Fund, established in 2008, has generously instituted an educational scholarship program intended to encourage and assist qualified female students in obtaining an education that will lead them into productive careers in the commercial real estate industry.

The Mildred C. Hanson, SIOR Memorial Fund will award a $3,000 scholarship to a qualified female student enrolled in a program of study designed in pursuit of an undergraduate degree in an accredited four-year college or university program in Real Estate, or Business or Finance with a concentration in Real Estate in the United States or Canada. One scholarship will be awarded in October 2010.

REFF Women in Real Estate Scholarship

The Real Estate Finance Forum (REFF) Scholarship fund was created in 2006 to encourage the rise of young women who have chosen to pursue an education in real estate for the purpose of building a career in a real estate related field. Each year one $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a junior, senior, or graduate student concentrating in the real estate area.

The Illinois Real Estate Educational Foundation

The Illinois Real Estate Educational Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established to aid and promote the work of real estate education throughout Illinois. The Foundation is supported by voluntary contributions from organizations and individuals who recognize the importance of furthering academic experience and training in the real estate industry in Illinois. Scholarship awards have become a prominent activity of the Foundation. Many students in real estate related curricula at colleges and universities have benefited from the Foundation’s scholarship grants.
